The Alexandra Park Stadium (formerly known as the Alexandra Park and sometimes known as the Pietermaritzburg Oval), is a multi-purpose stadium in Pietermaritbur, South Africa. The 12,000-capacity stadium is currently used for cricket games, with KwaZulu-Natal Inland men’s and women’s teams, KwaZulu-Natal and Dolphins (who also play at Kingsmead, Durban), and two matches during the 2003 Cricket World Cup being hosted there. It is one of only three first-class cricket grounds in the world with a tree within the boundary ropes (the others being St Lawrence Ground in Canterbury, United Kingdom, and VRA Cricket Ground in Amstelveen, Netherlands). Following a century or a five-wicket haul at the City Oval, any cricketer that scores a century or plants a tree at the ground gets to do so. Chesterfield’s Queen’s Park cricket ground served as inspiration for The City Oval Pavilion.

Is City Oval Cricket Ground Batting Or Bowling Pitch?

Because it is a batting pitch, the team that wins the toss in an ODI at The Oval almost always bowls first. In the 73 matches played here, 30 teams won batting first, 40 teams won batting second, and three games were postponed due to weather.

History

The first first-class cricket match on the City Oval, then known as Alexandra Park, took place in 1894/95. The City Oval was used by Natal and Marylebone Cricket Club for 9 first-class games between 1895 and 1957. The City Oval has been used to host numerous South African A side and touring cricket matches. In 1950, Natal welcomed an Australian squad on a tour while in 1958, the province hosted an Australian team on a similar visit. The City Oval was the site of a List A match between Bangladesh and the South African Board President’s XI in 2000, with Charl Langeveldt taking 5/7 as Bangladesh were bowled out for 51 and succumbed by 10 wickets. South Africa A and List A matches were also played at the City Oval against Australia A in 2002/03 and Sri Lanka A in 2008/09. In July 2015, three youth ODIs took place between the South Africa U-19 team and Bangladesh U-19 team; South Africa U-19 came out on top with two victories.
