County Ground (Derby, England) – Pitch Report

The Derbyshire County Cricket Ground, also known as The Racecourse Ground for many years due to its proximity to the town’s racecourse, has frequently looked in a similar neglected condition as the team. Until 1982, it didn’t have dedicated changing rooms, so the players utilized the old jockeys’ quarters. In 1939, due to low attendance and a lack of interest in cricket, the course was removed and the cricket square was relocated.The most breathtaking view is from the upper tier, which looks out over a valley containing the city centre and the natural amphitheatre of Wirksworth’s limestone mining past. You can also enjoy views across to Bakewell and Brian Clough Country Park. The ground may be exposed to the weather, especially on an average April or May day, so only the hardiest spectators (and Derbyshire fans need to be tough) will watch from the grandstands. However, recent development has improved the atmosphere at Chesterfield Cricket Ground considerably – if not always improving the weather. The Grandstand was demolished and rebuilt to serve as an indoor school and a variety of amenities for players, spectators, and media. Carol’s Cabin, a food caravan that served some of the best pies on the county circuit until the 1990s, was formerly a well-known feature of the stadium.
