The remarkable stadium we see today stands as a testament to the visionary leadership of the late Sri Lankan president Ranasinghe Premadasa. With his unwavering commitment to progress, he spearheaded the development of this magnificent 40,000-seater concrete bowl, which proudly holds the title of being the largest stadium in Sri Lanka. Inaugurated on 2nd February 1986, the stadium witnessed its first match between a Sri Lanka ‘B’ side and an England ‘B’ team. It was constructed on reclaimed swampland, which was previously utilized by monks to travel to the nearby Khettarama temple. This strategic location offers a unique blend of history and tranquility, adding to the stadium’s allure.
