The Sharjah Cricket Stadium was constructed in the beginning of the 80s, and it gained quick fame because of the increasing fervour for one-day cricket after India’s World Cup victory in 1983. It has been a regular spot for numerous tournaments since then.

From 1984 to 2003, 198 ODIs and 4 Tests with Pakistan were played in the ground. Additionally, Masters (veterans) events and other lower-division tournaments also took place attracting people from the massive expatriate Asian community of the region. The Cricketers Benefit Fund Series (CBFS) was founded in 1981 by Abdul Rahman Bukhatir, and it served as the platform for all of the games played. This initiative was launched to show appreciation and gratitude towards cricketers from India and Pakistan – both present and former, by providing them benefit purses as recognition for their valuable contribution to cricket.

The stadium started off small, with limited seating & amenities. However, by 2002 it had grown to a capacity of 27,000 and also included improved facilities like floodlights.
