Wanderers Stadium is a stadium located in Illovo, Johannesburg, Gauteng Province, South Africa, just south of Sandton. Cricket matches all three formats are played here. It also serves as the home ground for the Highveld Lions (formerly known as Transvaal) in domestic cricket.

The stadium was built in 1956 to replace the Old Wanderers Stadium, and has a capacity of 34,000 people. It was completely remodeled as part of South Africa’s return to international cricket in 1991. In 1996, five new 65-meter-high (213 ft) floodlight masts were erected, replacing the previous four 30-met

On October 1, 2004, the Wanderers Clubhouse was destroyed by fire. It had previously been known as Liberty Life Wanderers, but since 2008/09 it has been sponsored by Bidvest Group, thus it became Bidvest Wanderers Stadium until September 30, 2019.

History

The Wanderers, nicknamed the “Bullring” for its intimidating atmosphere for visiting teams, has a storied history. It was the third Test venue in Johannesburg, after the Old Wanderers Stadium and Ellis Park, having been built in 1923. Cricket or golf – which between them dominate the district of Illovo, where the club is located – or tennis, squash and bowls may be found tucked away in back streets for more than 74 years at this venue, which has served as a focal point of Johannesburg’s sporting aspirations since it opened in 1924.

In October 2003, the entire clubhouse was destroyed by a fire that started in the kitchens and spread via the ventilation ducts, leaving little to salvage three-quarters of a century of history. Amongst the trophies, photographs, and cricketana lost for ever was Graeme Pollock’s bat with which he scored 274 against Australia in 1966-67.
