Blundstone Oval Cricket Stadium, commonly known as Blundstone Arena for sponsorship reasons, is a cricket and Australian rules football venue in Bellerive, a suburb on the eastern shore of Hobart, Australia that has space for 20,000 spectators – making it the second biggest stadium in Tasmania. It is one of only two grounds in Tasmania where international Cricket matches are played.

The GABAL nestground is located around the Hobart Cricket Ground, which has hosted international Test matches since 1989 and one-day matches since 1988. It is also the secondary home ground of North Melbourne in the Australian Football League (AFL), who play three home games a year at the venue. To accommodate such activities, the stadium has undergone considerable renovations.

History

In 1987, the Tasmanian Cricket Association moved its headquarters from the historic TCA Ground on Hobart’s Queen’s Domain to the beautiful Bellerive Oval on the eastern shore of the Derwent River. Since 2000, the facility has seen a significant makeover, with most of the improvements made since then. The Southern Stand (capacity 5800), Members and Players Pavilions, and two minor stands make up the rest of the stadium.The dimensions of the field are 175m x 135m, which is somewhat longer but somewhat narrower than the MCG.

The first artificial turf wickets were laid at Bellerive in 1957, and since then the facility has seen significant modifications, including the removal of a clear camber and leveling of the oval. In the centre of the ten-strip wicket, couch grass grows. In the perimeters, English rye is planted. The Bellerive wicket formerly offered bowlers early movement, but as the match progresses, and afternoon sea-breezes off the Derwent River influence the ground, it becomes a batting paradise. In 1989, Tasmania’s inaugural Test between Australia and Sri Lanka was played here.
