College Ground is a cricket ground in the campus of Cheltenham College, Gloucestershire, England. The county cricket club has played more than 300 first-class and nearly 70 List A matches there. It also hosted an international women’s One-Day Match between England and Australia in 2005.

The College Ground, currently a residential and administrative campus of the University of Gloucestershire in United Kingdom, has hosted first-class cricket since 1872. When Gloucestershire played Surrey in 1872, it was the venue for the inaugural first-class match; Gloucestershire won by an innings and 37 runs because to W. G. Grace’s 12–63 performance. In August 1876, when he batted against Yorkshire for the Gentlemen of Marylebone Cricket Club at Canterbury, Grace became the first man to score a triple century in a county match; he had made history with his first triple hundred for The Gentlemen of Marylebone Cricket Club at Canterbury just one week earlier.

Is College Ground Cricket Stadium Batting Or Bowling Pitch?

The willow wove is a fantastic batting pitch, and the batters can score big if they can just get their eye in. The willow wielders, on the other hand, must handle the initial overs with care.

History

Every year, during Cheltenham week, the school grounds of Cheltenham College host Gloucestershire Cricket. James Lillywhite, the cricket coach at the College in the 1870s, started the tradition of staging a festival in Gloucester. WG scalped a triple century (318*) against Yorkshire in 1876 immediately after “gracing” with a slope that was later adopted by Grace. In 1890, against Nottinghamshire, she took 17 wickets for 89 runs. The ground features a distinct slope and is nicely set off by historic Central Building and St. Luke’s Church. A canvas fence surrounds it; during the Festival, many marquees can be found here.
