The largest sports stadium in New Zealand is Eden Park. It is located in central Auckland, three kilometers south of the city center on the border between Mount Eden and Kingsland suburbs. Although it has mainly been used for rugby union in winter and cricket throughout the year, it has also hosted rugby league and association football matches. Pool matches were held at Eden Park in 2011, as well as two quarter-finals, both semi-finals, and the final of the 2011 Rugby World Cup. The stadium hosted the first World Cup final in 1987, and since then has played host to two further finals. It was a venue for the 2015 Cricket World Cup, which was jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

Eden Park is regarded as one of rugby union’s most difficult challenges for visiting teams. The All Blacks, New Zealand’s national rugby union team, have a 46-match unbeaten streak at this ground that began in 1994. Eden Park will host the 2021 Te Matatini, as well as the 2021 Women’s Cricket World Cup final and the opening match of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. It will also be the venue for 2021 Women’s Cricket World Cup Group B Match 1

History

Eden Park was built on swamp land that had been fed by lava caverns created by Maungawhau / Mount Eden and Mount Albert over 30,000 years ago. The marsh was used for food and supplies collection by Tāmaki Maori. Cornish farmer John Walters acquired the property in 1845. Since 1900, the park has served as a sports venue. Eden Park began life as a cricket ground in 1903. It was due to Harry Ryan’s vision, who sought permission from landowner John Walters to lease part of his acreage as a sports field, that Eden Park became a park in the book: The authors note that, “The origins of rugby are obscure.” “Certainly,” they write, “the rough paddock strewn with stones, studded with outcrops of rock and streaked with cowpats, sloping down to a boggy trough that filled in a downpour and stayed flooded throughout the winter, suggested frog-hunting or duck-shooting rather than cricket. Ryan was either right or at least smarter. Much preparatory work on the cricket ground was required, including clearing away older stone walls that had been used to demarcate fields; drainage problems remained an issue.
