History
Leicestershire Cricket Ground Co bought 16 acres of land from the Duke of Rutland in 1877. They spent £40,000 on developing a cricket club, an athletic track and a hotel. The first match was played on April 22, 1878 and three months later the venue staged a game against the touring Australians.
In 1901, the county decided that the site was not economically viable and moved to Aylestone Road, which is closer to the town centre. They departed during WWII but never returned; instead, in 1946, they reverted to Grace Road as tennants of City Boys Grammar School, who owned the property at that time.
In 1966, Leicestershire finally reclaimed the site and throughout the 1970s and 1980s, it was developed further. to the point where it was scheduled to host two ODIs during the 1999 World Cup. The previous record occurred when 16,000 spectators saw a game against the visiting 1948 Australians in 1948.
