Durban Cricket Ground is also known as Kingsmead and is located in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Grass terracing accounts for part of the viewing area, but it has a capacity of 25,000 people. The ‘end names’ are the Umgeni End (north) and the Old Fort

Hollywoodbets was revealed as the stadium’s title sponsor in October 2019, with it becoming known as Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium until August 2024. The ground has witnessed the first home Test for South Africa since re-admission to international cricket, and it also hosted the Test against England in 1939, which ran from March 3rd to 13

The first Test match ever held in Durban was between South Africa and England on 18 January 1923, which ended in a draw after five days.

The ground is near to the beach and has been known as a seamers’ wicket, and there is a famous tale regarding how the tide affects batting conditions because the ground is close to the coast. Many batting collapses in previous matches have been humorously attributed to changes in the tide.

Is Kingsmead Cricket Ground Batting Or Bowling Pitch?

The Kingsmead wicket has generally been a reasonable balance between bat and ball. The bowlers receive a good bounce from the surface, while the list of top wicket-takers is led by fast bowlers. However, the weather conditions provide value for shots.

History

Kingsmead is a stone’s throw from the sea, nestled in humid Durban. The ground has hosted trials since January 1923, when England and South Africa played to a draw. When England had to catch the boat home in 1939, they and South Africa played a timeless Test that also ended in a draw.

The history of Kingsmead has a number of memorable moments, including South Africa’s innings and 129-run thrashing of Australia in February 1970, when Graeme Pontock and Barry Richards hammered the Australian bowlers to all parts of the ground for 274 and 140 runs.

South Africa has had its ups and downs on the field. In 2003, South Africa scored 658 for 9 against West Indies, but India were bowled out for just 66 in 1996. The World Cup semi-final between India and Kenya was played at Kingsmead in 2003.
