M.R. International Cricket Stadium, often known as Sooriyawewa International Cricket Stadium and abbreviated MRIC Stadium, is an international cricket stadium in Hambantota, Sri Lanka. It was constructed for the 2011 Cricket World Cup and hosted two matches: Sri Lanka vs Canada on February 20, 2011. With a capacity of 35,000 people, it is the second-largest stadium in Sri Lanka after Galle Face Green Park Ground (GFP).

History

The Department of Sports in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka was considering a new International Cricket Stadium at Sooriyawewa as part of its plan to develop sports in the area, according to the government’s program to transform Hambantota into the country’s second major urban center outside Colombo.

In February, 2011, the Hambantota International Cricket Stadium in Sri Lanka hosted several matches as part of the 2011 Cricket World Cup. On 20 February 2011, Canada faced Sri Lanka in the first official international match, which Sri Lanka won by 210 runs. During the World Cup, two matches were held at the site.
