History

The venue’s name was changed to Newlands at the same time as it became known as Springbok Park, after a sponsorship deal. Now more frequently known by its sponsor’s name, Newlands is a well-designed 20,000-seat stadium with two big stands and grassed banks that draw large groups that want to barbecue while watching cricket.

The first one-day international was held on the ground in December 1992, when South Africa beat India by eight wickets. In October 2000, Zimbabwe became the first full Test nation to play there.

When, fittingly, Allan Donald, who had spent many years as a Free State cricketer on the South African Test scene before becoming the first South African to capture 300 test wickets during the first Test against New Zealand in November 2000, took guard for his record 300th scalp, he added yet another chapter to this ground’s ancient history.
