Manuka Oval is a sporting venue in Canberra, the capital of Australia. It is located in Griffith, in the Manuka area of that suburb. The overall capacity of 16,000 people is lower for some sports depending on the configuration used, but it can seat 13,550 people. Since the early 20th century, when it was first used for sport, the ground has been situated on this site. It has had various upgrades since then and was most recently rebuilt starting in 2011

Manuka Oval is presently used for cricket (from May to September) and Australian rules football (from October to March). The ground was formerly utilized for rugby league and rugby union matches, but there are now better alternatives in Canberra for those sports. Manuka Oval is the home venue of the ACT Comets (men’s) and Meteors (women’s) teams, as well as a number of international fixtures.

History

The park’s name was changed from “Manuka Circle Park” to Manuka Oval in the mid-1920s. The Māori name for Leptospermum scoparium, Manuka, was used for the park and a nearby shopping centre. Various sports organizations lobbied for the field to be converted into an enclosed oval starting in 1926. In 1929, work began on the construction of a fence and other improvements at Manuka Oval. The field had previously been used to play rugby league and Australian rules football informally. In April 1930, the first cricket pitch was established. In 1962, in celebration of Sir Donald Bradman, the Bradman Pavilion, the main stand of the oval, was built. The Robert Menzies Stand and Bob Hawke Stand were erected in 1987 and 1992 respectively, both being named after Australia’s first two prime ministers to bring international cricket teams to Canberra to play against the Prime Minister’s XI. During 2004 Manuka Oval marked its 75th anniversary as a formal venue.
