History
Despite the fact that space limitations at the Antigua Recreation Ground restricted development potential, the decision to replace it as Antigua’s most popular venue was a contentious one. Even when attendance is modest, serious problems in gaining access to the grass field persist – and locals’ resistance to accept the new ground’s remoteness meant audiences have been dismal from the start. The outfield has also been a source of concern since the start, and despite having replaced in 2008 after the Australia Test, the 2009 Test against England was abandoned after ten balls because of the sandy and hazardous condition of bowlers’ run-ups. It raised concerns about the survival of a neglected venue.
The stadium is set among two monumental stands, the five-story southern one containing the pavilion as well as corporate business attire, and the north. The architects added burms (terraces) on the eastern and western sides to enhance this impression of a more informal Caribbean ambiance.
