St George’s Park Cricket Ground in St George’s Park, Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), South Africa, is one of the country’s most iconic cricket facilities. It is the home of the Port Elizabeth Cricket Club, one of South Africa’s oldest clubs. The stadium is home to the province’s top cricket club, the Western Province Cricket Club, as well as numerous first-class engagements each year. It is also one of the sites where Test matches and One Day Internationals are held in South Africa. It predates Kingswood College in Grahamstown by several decades.

In March 1889, the first Test was played at the ground when England beat South Africa by 8 wickets. This was South Africa’s inaugural Test match. Since 2005, 21 Tests have been held at the stadium, with South Africa winning eight and their opponents nine while there have been four draws.

Is Port Elizabeth Stadium Batting Or Bowling Pitch?

The South African team has had a difficult time on the dirt. In 1992, they won by 9 wickets with Allan Donald taking 12 for 139 on a pitch that many believed favoured spin bowling but was also difficult for fast bowlers. However, in 1997, Australia defeated them by two runs after leading by 101 runs in the first innings.

History

The inaugural Test to be held outside of England or Australia took place at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth in 1888-89, when England scored eight more wickets (England won by eight wickets). In 1969-70, the last match before South Africa’s 21-year ban, it hosted the decider.

It hosted the country’s first rugby international in 1891, as well as South Africa’s first cricket fixture against England. In 1896 it viewed one of Test match cricket’s most memorable matches. George Lohmann took 7 for 38 in South Africa’s first innings and 8 for 7 in their second, leaving England with just 30 runs to win.

The South African team has had mixed success on the ground. In 1992, they won by 9 wickets thanks to a magnificent 9-wicket victory over England, with Allan Donald taking 12 for 139 on a surface that many pundits predicted would favor spin bowling and was difficult to bowl on.

The two were on the losing side against Australia in 1997, when they fell short by two wickets after leading by 101 runs on the first innings. Mark Waugh posted one of his finest Test innings in this match, making a career-best 126 not out.
