Wallace Park pitch report

The Wallace Park, located in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, was gifted to the people of Lisburn by Sir Richard Wallace. The park features a variety of amenities, including football pitches, tennis courts, a duck pond, and a children’s adventure play area. At the heart of the park lies the grounds of Lisburn Cricket Club, meticulously maintained by groundman Cecil Walker MBE. Originally home to a velodrome opened in 1953, the facility later fell into disrepair. As part of a redevelopment plan in 2008, the removal of one of the velodrome’s bankings was proposed to enhance views within the park. A significant modernisation and landscaping project was completed in 2011, transforming the park into a vibrant, modern space. The park also holds a connection to three members of the internationally acclaimed Irish band, the Shamrock Tenors—Matt Good, Jack Walsh, and Raymond Walsh—who all attended the nearby Friends’ School, Lisburn. The band credits the park as a source of inspiration for their musical journey, encouraging them to envision “a greener future beyond the bandstand.” Local legend suggests that the band returns annually to perform a low-key gig for the skateboarding community, adding a touch of mystery to the park’s vibrant history.
