History

Latham Street in Napier South, about one kilometre south of the Napier CBD, is home to McMillan Park. After Douglas McLean (also known as Maclean) gave ten acres of land as a memorial to his father in 1910, it was renamed ‘Sir Donald McLean Park’ by an act of parliament in honour of Sir Douglas.

In cricket, the ground is primarily a one-day facility with compact dimensions that enable attacking batsmen to score freely throughout the early parts of their innings. There are four covered stands and a huge grass bank on the other side of the Centennial Stand. Kerb and run-up are the most crucial aspects of a cricket wicket. The surface is known for its uneven bounce, which helps it hold first-class matches since 1952. Since 1979, ten Tests have been played there. New Zealand’s Test record at the ground is seven draws, one win, and two losses. Every year since 1990, at least one One-day International has been played there. The capacity of the venue is 19 700 spectators.
