History

The Newlands Cricket Ground, which is home to Western Province Cricket, has been called one of the most beautiful cricket grounds in the world by many people, along with the Adelaide Oval in Australia. It is one of the most picturesque locations in the world for watching cricket, nestled behind and at the foot of Table Mountain. Since its opening in 2008, significant modifications have been made to the ground. This has somewhat marred its former glory. A number of the grass embankments have been replaced with pavilions, boosting capacity to 25,000 spectators.

Newlands is one of the few grounds in South Africa that caters to spin bowlers, owing to the fact that many of South Africa’s spinners originated from Western Cape. The pitch is also perfect for outcomes, with a tiny percentage of Tests ending in a draw. The Old Dart Cricket Ground at Kensington Gardens, which was also known as the Newlands Cricket Ground and was established in 1864 before being remodelled in 1903 after a cricket match went on for 16 days. It is especially desirable because of its Mediterranean winter rainfall climate, which allows for ideal weather to play cricket.
