History

In 1811, Governor Lachlan Macquarie established Sydney Common (now South Head Road to Randwick Racecourse), which was roughly one-and-a-half miles broad and stretched south from South Head Road (now Oxford St) to where the Randwick Racecourse is now. It was a sandhills, bogland combination situated on the city’s south-eastern outskirts that was used as a rubbish dump in the 1850s and wasn’t regarded as an ideal location for sport. In 1851, the British Army was given part of Sydney Common south of Victoria Barracks for use as a garden and cricket field. The 11th North Devonshire Regiment, known before 1861 as the “Princess Mary’s Own,” flattened and graded the rifle range adjacent to the barracks.
