History

  • Between 1993 and 2005, the Gabba was rebuilt in six phases for A$128 million. The playing field is now 170.6 meters (560 feet) long east-west (north-south) to accommodate Australian rules football at professional level. In 2010, the ground’s capacity is 42,000 people, which has been lowered as a result of new electronic scoreboards and corporate facilities installed over recent years. The total number of seats for international cricket matches has decreased to 36,000 since the construction of brand-new scoreboards and a pool deck, as well as wider sight screens. The capacity for AFL games is slightly bigger at 37,478. For the 2032 Olympics, the maximum capacity will be 50,000.
  • In 1972, The Gabba was transformed into a greyhound racing venue, with night meetings held on a weekly basis at the ground for 21 years.
