The Pakistan cricket team has an outstanding Test record at the venue, having lost just twice in 40 Tests there. The stadium has seen several historic events, including Viv Richards’ consecutive century against Sri Lanka at the 1987 Cricket World Cup, Mohammad Yousuf’s record ninth century of the year to break Viv Richards’ record for most runs in a calendar year, and Kamran Akmal’s famous hundred against India on a very difficult pitch in 2006, as part of a thrilling come-from-behind victory.

The National Stadium was built in April 1955. Karachi was then the capital of Pakistan, but there was only one cricket ground at the Karachi Gymkhana, which had a limited seating capacity. A proposal to build a new stadium was put forward, and a plot of land measuring 174.5 acres was obtained by the Pakistan Public Works Department through the Commissioner of Karachi. Following this, Mr Kafiluddin Ahmed, a prominent civil engineer from East Pakistan, designed and constructed Karachi’s fifth and Pakistan’s 11th first-class venue.

History

Karachi, Pakistan’s largest and most populous metropolis, offers a fascinating and colorful juxtaposition of the old and new. Karachi’s fifth first-class ground, as well as Pakistan’s 11th, was National Stadium. On April 21-24, 1955, NSK hosted Pakistan’s inaugural first-class match against India; it quickly became a fortress for Pakistani cricket. From that first Test through December 2000, Pakistan won 17 games and never lost in 34 Tests.

In 2005, they drew their first Test against the West Indies in Barbados. They have won five of their six Tests on foreign soil with only Bangladesh and Sri Lanka visiting since then. It is a shame because the spectators are energetic – and noisy – and it’s a wonderful location to play and watch.

The first One-Day International at the National Stadium was between Pakistan and West Indies on November 21, 1980, and it went down to the last ball with Gordon Greenidge driving Imran imperiously to the cover boundary with three required. It has been a less successful limited-overs venue; losses have outnumbered victories by a long shot. In fact, Pakistan has not won on the ground in just under five years since it opened. It also played in a quarterfinal match during the 1996-97 World Cup.
